Why is corneal thickness important when considering LASIK?

April 16th, 2012

The thickness of the cornea is one of the major factors in determining if LASIK is the most appropriate refractive surgery for an individual.  During LASIK a flap is cut on the surface of the cornea.  The flap is peeled back, and a laser reshapes the cornea by removing tissue before the flap is laid back down.  The amount of tissue removed is determined by the prescription power being corrected, thus someone who is more myopic would require more tissue removed.  A certain amount of corneal bed thickness must be maintained to prevent an increased risk of post-surgery complications such as corneal ectasia.  However, just because one doctor feels a patient has corneas that are too thin to safely undergo LASIK does not mean that would be the consensus among all doctors.  Experienced surgeons using advanced equipment might be able to perform LASIK on a patient who was denied by another physician.  And conversely, one doctor might recommend LASIK where another would not.  For this reason, it is important to visit a reputable doctor, and in some cases, seek several opinions before proceeding with a refractive surgery.

Astigmatism and LASIK

November 9th, 2011

Often mispronounced and widely misunderstood, astigmatism is a common refractive error that is simply a problem with how the eye focuses light. While the curvature of a normal cornea is uniform and usually round and spherical, like the shape of a basketball, patients with astigmatism have a cornea that is typically shaped like a football. Instead of light coming to a single focus on the retina to produce clear vision, multiple focus points occur, which can result in blurry or distorted vision.

Although many people believe astigmatism makes them ineligible for LASIK, the procedure can still be a safe and effective method of vision correction. The type and severity of your astigmatism are factors your doctor will examine to determine if LASIK eye surgery will be beneficial to you. In some situations, people with astigmatism should not have LASIK because a successful outcome is more likely with a different procedure.

An FSA is a Financially Smart Approach to paying for LASIK

October 5th, 2011

Did you overestimate how much money you would need in your FSA this year?  Do you need to spend the funds quickly, but would also like to do so wisely?  If your company offers an FSA as part of your health insurance, consider using this benefit for LASIK.  An FSA is a great way to pay for LASIK, and save money in the process.  FSA money has been set aside before the deduction of payroll taxes. If you paid for the surgery from your savings, the money would have first been taxed.  And with health care reform soon lowering the annual limit for an FSA, now is the time to act.  It is best to first determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure and to learn more about options and cost before deciding upon an amount to set aside.  We encourage you to contact Price Vision Group to schedule a complimentary screening.

August – National Cataract Awareness Month

August 24th, 2011

In order to preserve and protect your vision, regular eye exams are crucial.  As with many medical conditions, early detection is key.  August is National Cataract Awareness Month, and it is important to understand what cataracts are, the risk factors, and what information to bring to an exam.

A cataract is usually described as a clouding of the eye.  A cataract scatters light as it passes through the lens, preventing a sharp image from reaching your retina. The result is blurry vision, or the feeling like you are looking through a foggy window.  A cataract can make everyday activities like reading and driving more difficult.  Most cataracts develop slowly and do not comprise vision in the early stages. With time, however, cataracts can greatly interfere with vision.
Risk factors include increasing age, excessive sunlight exposure, family history, obesity, and smoking.  If you feel like you might have a cataract it is important to schedule an examination.  At your cataract appointment, it often helps to be prepared.  Write down any symptoms you’ve noticed, information like risk factors and a list of prescribed medications, and any questions you might have for the doctor.

Allergy Eyes

June 9th, 2011

When people think of seasonal allergies, they usually think of a runny nose, congested head, and sneezing. However, your eyes can also be affected. Allergies can cause eyes to be red, watery, swollen, itchy, or dry. They might also burn or sting. While this can be uncomfortable, it is important to avoid rubbing the eyes. Rubbing can cause infections, increase histamine to make the itching sensation worse, or even lead to a more serious condition called Keratoconus. While oral antihistamines can bring relief, artificial tears and over-the-counter medicated drops can also provide comfort. However, if symptoms persist, a doctor can prescribe the appropriate type of allergy eye drop.

LASIK and Night Vision

May 9th, 2011

A common concern among people considering LASIK is the possiblity of night vision issues, including glare, starbursts, and halos.  While this can be an issue for some while wearing glasses or contacts, it can be a temporary side effect after LASIK.  Although large pupils, dry eye, or incomplete correction can aggravate night vision after surgery, the most common cause of decreased night vision is swelling of the LASIK flap.  And because this swelling subsides within a month, the side effect is typically temporary and manageable.  Price Vision Group uses the ALLEGRETTO WAVE® laser, which is engineered to consider the natural shape of the human eye and to improve what nature originally designed. The Wavefront Optimized™ treatment considers the unique curvature and biomechanics of the eye, preserving quality of vision and addressing the spherical distortions that can induce glare and may affect night vision.

Start off Spring and Summer with LASIK

April 11th, 2011

Now that vacation season has arrived, wouldn’t it be nice to leave the glasses and contacts at home? Can’t you imagine that boating, swimming, and sandy beaches would be much more enjoyable without them? Although many people are unsure of how LASIK affects their ability to be in the water, swimming, hot tubs, and saunas must only be avoided for two weeks after the procedure. And scuba divers must wait only a month before diving. So before the weather really heats up, consider LASIK – it will make all of your summer plans more enjoyable. Plus, it will give you an excuse to pick out some nice, new sunglasses!

Contact Lens Conundrums

March 25th, 2011

Unquestionably, contact lenses are a favorable alternative to wearing glasses.  With all of the different options of lenses, many people are satisfied with their comfort and convenience.  However, problems can arise from their frequent use.  Tight lens syndrome occurs when a lens is either not properly fit to the user or dries out over time.  The lens tightly adheres to the eye and causes poor vision and discomfort.  Allergies can also plague contact lens wearers, causing tearing, itching, swelling, redness, or foreign body sensation.  Previously known irritants, like pollen, can cause irritation, and new allergies can develop from lenses and cleaning products, which can lead to giant papillary conjunctivitis, or bumps that form under the eyelid.  Corneal problems, like scratching, swelling, or ulcers, can cause serious discomfort and can sometimes result in permanent damage if not treated quickly.  While drops and ointments can usually treat most of these conditions, change in user habits is also required.  Lenses should be handled and cleaned properly, replaced as often as the manufacturer suggests, and should not be worn excessively.  However, if problems persist and lenses become intolerable or unsafe, eyeglasses or refractive surgery, like LASIK, are other options for vision correction.  Contact lens users who are between 21-60 years of age and who have worn lenses at least five years consistently can participate in a compensated study at Price Vision Group
