The thickness of the cornea is one of the major factors in determining if LASIK is the most appropriate refractive surgery for an individual. During LASIK a flap is cut on the surface of the cornea. The flap is peeled back, and a laser reshapes the cornea by removing tissue before the flap is laid back down. The amount of tissue removed is determined by the prescription power being corrected, thus someone who is more myopic would require more tissue removed. A certain amount of corneal bed thickness must be maintained to prevent an increased risk of post-surgery complications such as corneal ectasia. However, just because one doctor feels a patient has corneas that are too thin to safely undergo LASIK does not mean that would be the consensus among all doctors. Experienced surgeons using advanced equipment might be able to perform LASIK on a patient who was denied by another physician. And conversely, one doctor might recommend LASIK where another would not. For this reason, it is important to visit a reputable doctor, and in some cases, seek several opinions before proceeding with a refractive surgery.

Anne Schroeder, MD is a graduate of The University of Chicago and The Chicago Medical School, with honors. She completed her ophthalmology training at the Havener Eye Institute at Ohio State University, where she was an active member of the Resident Advisory Council and performed research in the areas of glaucoma and retina. Following graduation, Dr. Schroeder joined a Mt. Sinai affiliated practice in New York where she combined academics and community practice in a caring and compassionate manner.

Often mispronounced and widely misunderstood, astigmatism is a common refractive error that is simply a problem with how the eye focuses light. While the curvature of a normal cornea is uniform and usually round and spherical, like the shape of a basketball, patients with astigmatism have a cornea that is typically shaped like a football. Instead of light coming to a single focus on the retina to produce clear vision, multiple focus points occur, which can result in blurry or distorted vision.
Although many people believe astigmatism makes them ineligible for LASIK, the procedure can still be a safe and effective method of vision correction. The type and severity of your astigmatism are factors your doctor will examine to determine if LASIK eye surgery will be beneficial to you. In some situations, people with astigmatism should not have LASIK because a successful outcome is more likely with a different procedure.

In order to preserve and protect your vision, regular eye exams are crucial. As with many medical conditions, early detection is key. August is National Cataract Awareness Month, and it is important to understand what cataracts are, the risk factors, and what information to bring to an exam.
A cataract is usually described as a clouding of the eye. A cataract scatters light as it passes through the lens, preventing a sharp image from reaching your retina. The result is blurry vision, or the feeling like you are looking through a foggy window. A cataract can make everyday activities like reading and driving more difficult. Most cataracts develop slowly and do not comprise vision in the early stages. With time, however, cataracts can greatly interfere with vision.
Risk factors include increasing age, excessive sunlight exposure, family history, obesity, and smoking. If you feel like you might have a cataract it is important to schedule an examination. At your cataract appointment, it often helps to be prepared. Write down any symptoms you’ve noticed, information like risk factors and a list of prescribed medications, and any questions you might have for the doctor.

Price Vision Group is fortunate to have two new physicians at the practice. Drs. Michele Todman and Lawrence Tenkman joined the practice in July to complete their fellowships in corneal and refractive surgery. Dr. Todman studied Business and Psychology at the University of Rochester before pursuing her medical degree at Vanderbilt and Penn State Universities. She then completed her residency at Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital. She plans to continue her career in academic medicine with the hopes of improving patient care and advancing the field through meaningful research and education. Dr. Todman has taught English in Japan and performed community service in Israel and Honduras. She is an avid basketball and bocce ball player and also enjoys photography and acrylic painting. Dr. Tenkman studied Psychology and Pre-Med at Xavier University and completed his medical degree at The Ohio State University. He completed his residency at the University of Cincinnati and is currently completing a glaucoma fellowship at Emory University. Dr. Tenkman would ultimately like to practice as an anterior segment surgeon in an ophthalmology group. He enjoys both watching and playing sports, chess, movies, and spending time with his wife and two children.

When people think of seasonal allergies, they usually think of a runny nose, congested head, and sneezing. However, your eyes can also be affected. Unquestionably, contact lenses are a favorable alternative to wearing glasses. With all of the different options of lenses, many people are satisfied with their comfort and convenience. However, problems can arise from their frequent use. Tight lens syndrome occurs when a lens is either not properly fit to the user or dries out over time. The lens tightly adheres to the eye and causes poor vision and discomfort. Allergies can also plague contact lens wearers, causing tearing, itching, swelling, redness, or foreign body sensation. Previously known irritants, like pollen, can cause irritation, and new allergies can develop from lenses and cleaning products, which can lead to giant papillary conjunctivitis, or bumps that form under the eyelid. Corneal problems, like scratching, swelling, or ulcers, can cause serious discomfort and can sometimes result in permanent damage if not treated quickly. While drops and ointments can usually treat most of these conditions, change in user habits is also required. Lenses should be handled and cleaned properly, replaced as often as the manufacturer suggests, and should not be worn excessively. However, if problems persist and lenses become intolerable or unsafe, eyeglasses or refractive surgery, like LASIK, are other options for vision correction.
